Salt on Your Skin

Salt on Your Skin, the cover of the song by Nova Rai

The story

One summer evening on a lake terrace I watched an old couple across the restaurant. His hand found her wrist like coming home, the lake still on her shoulders, red wine between them. I didn't know their story and I didn't need to. I only wondered if I would ever have a love that wears that well. The love that lasts is not the one without salt; it is the one that keeps tasting it.

Lyrics

His hand across the table
Finds her wrist like coming home
She tilts her neck, he reads her pulse
A language of their own

The lake still on her shoulders
Sun still warm beneath her dress
He remembers how to want her
In this beautiful forgetting

And I'm watching how he watches her
Like the first time, like the last
All those ordinary evenings
Burning off like morning glass

Salt on your skin
Let me taste where the water has been
Salt on your skin
Caramel sweet where the sun soaked in
Pour the wine
Red like the flush when your eyes meet mine
I want to know you
The way that they know
Salt on your skin

No kids calling from the hallway
No alarms to break the spell
Just her laugh across the table
And the stories their bodies tell

He traces where her swimsuit was
The white against the brown
She shivers though the air is warm
The waiter turns around

And I wonder if I'll ever have
A love that wears this well
Bitter years and tender nights
And still have tales to tell

Salt on your skin
Let me taste where the water has been
Salt on your skin
Caramel sweet where the sun soaked in
Pour the wine
Red like the flush when your eyes meet mine
I want to know you
The way that they know
Salt on your skin

Sweet and salt
Sugar and sea
What breaks apart
Is what sets you free

She knows his damage
He knows her dark
Still they're burning
Still they spark

Salt on your skin
Every wave, every year, every sin
Salt on your skin
Taste the places we've already been
Pour the wine
Tonight we're crossing every line
I want to know you
Like the very first time
Salt on your skin

Salt on your skin
The lake, the years, the wine
Salt on your skin
Still yours, still mine
Still mine
